Bhim army founder Chandrashekhar challenges his detention by the UP govt: SC issues notices to state, Saharanpur DM

Chandrashekhar @ Ravan Vs State of Uttar Pradesh Special Leave Petition (Crl) 26284/2018 in the Supreme Court of India

The Supreme Court has issued a notice to the state of Uttar Pradesh and the District Magistrate Saharanpur in response to the petition challenging the detention of Chandrashekhar @ Ravan (the founder of Bhim Army) under the National Security Act (NSA).

The state of Uttar Pradesh had registered FIRs and filed a chargesheet against Chandrashekhar in five cases after the protests and rioting on May 9, 2017, at Saharanpur in UP.

The trial court and high court of Allahabad had granted him bail in all the five cases, but thereafter, the UP government slapped the NSA against him and has kept him in detention since November 2, 2017, in the Saharanpur jail. It then extended the detention for a year.

Chandrashekhar challenged this detention order before the Supreme Court on August 10, 2018. The matter was listed before the bench of CJI Dipak Misra and the court admitted the matter and issued notice to the UP government and the Saharanpur DM. Senior advocate Colin Gonsalves and HRLN advocate Shreeji Bhavsar had appeared on Chandrashekhar’s behalf.
