Inam Ahmed v. Union of India and Ors. [W.P.(PIL) No. 3204 of 2015], Hon’ble High Court of Jharkhand

A public interest litigation stating that the State of Jharkhand has high fluoride content in water was filed. The PIL was substantiated by fact finding that was initiated by the petitioner along with some health activists in 2014.

Through the PIL, the petitioner has prayed for the proper implementation of the National Rural Drinking Water Program and the Rural Water Supply and Sanitation project in order to ensure the right to safe drinking water for the residents of Bodra village.

In order to identify the ailments and the appropriate medical treatment of the villagers, it was also prayed that the respondents should arrange for medical camps with CMO level doctors and also be provided with adequate compensation and a certificate of disability.

The state in its reply mentioned that to provide safe drinking water to the people of Bodra and adjoining villages a detailed project report for the project cost of Rs. 1122.54 lakh for pipe water supply has been prepared and around 12,225 people will be benefitted with the said project. The case was taken up by the Court and it was ordered to install the fluoride removal equipments in rest of the hand pumps implementation of which was later confirmed by the concerned respondent authority through an affidavit.

After filing affidavit by the concerned authority as stated above, the PIL is disposed of. It is expected by the Hon’ble Court that the steps initiated by the Government, as stated in the counter affidavit, shall be completed within time bound schedule.
